Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania

Located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, Whitehall Township functions under a home rule charter. According to the 2020 census, the area is home to 29,173 people. One of its historical attractions is the Helfrich’s Springs Grist Mill, which has been standing since 1807 and has seen many years pass by.

The township is led by Democratic Mayor Joseph J. Marx, Jr., and covers an area of about 12.86 square miles, including both land and a small amount of water.
It sits at an elevation of 384 feet and is part of the larger Lehigh Valley metropolitan region, which had a population of over 861,000 in 2020, placing it as the 68th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Whitehall Township maintains its own identity as a separate suburb of Allentown, located just 4.4 miles to the north. Its position also gives it a convenient location near major cities, being approximately 64 miles northwest of Philadelphia and about 94 miles west of New York City.

The area has a number of notable landmarks, both historical and modern.
From 1948 to 1964, Breadon Field was a key local venue for sports, having hosted three different Minor League Baseball teams. Presently, the commercial center of the township is MacArthur Road, a busy shopping area with the Lehigh Valley Mall as a major attraction.

History of Whitehall, PA

Located in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh County, Whitehall Township’s history doesn’t start with its creation in 1867, but stretches back many years before. In 1681, William Penn received his famous charter from King Charles II. After his passing, control of the region moved to his sons, who later obtained a land deed from the Lenape tribe in 1736. Soon after, the first German settlers, including Jacob Kohler in 1728, arrived, clearing land for farms and forming the villages that would shape the area.

The relationship with the Lenape was initially peaceful, but that changed due to a dishonest land agreement.
The infamous “Walking Purchase” of 1737 used a professional runner to greatly expand the European claim, pushing the tribe’s borders far north. This unfair deal led to growing tensions, resulting in a violent uprising in 1763, where Fort Deshler played a crucial role in defending the settlers.

The 19th century marked a time of industrial growth.
The completion of the Lehigh Canal in 1829 was a major turning point, followed by the discovery of iron ore and the development of railroads. This industrial expansion attracted immigrants from Wales and Ireland. Further growth came from an unexpected source: the rich deposits of Jacksonburg limestone found during railroad construction. This led to a cement boom, led by David O. Saylor, which brought in a new wave of immigrants from Austria-Hungary and made the region a national leader in cement production.

By 1900, Whitehall had developed into a first-rate township.
The post-WWII years saw a shift from manufacturing to retail, transforming it into the suburban community it is today. The individual villages were officially combined under the single “Whitehall” postal identity in 1968. A major step in modernization came in 1974 with the adoption of a Home Rule Charter, establishing the mayoral-council government that now oversees a municipal budget exceeding $21 million.

Geography of Whitehall, PA

Tucked along Allentown’s northern border in eastern Lehigh County, Whitehall Township spans 12.9 square miles. Its landscape is predominantly land, with the Lehigh River tracing its eastern boundary and serving as a natural divider from neighboring Northampton County boroughs. This river also drains the township, while a modest 0.3 square miles of its area is covered by water.

The township’s name hearkens back to the early 1700s, derived from a “white hall” hunting lodge built near Jordan Creek. This area was once a veritable wilderness, teeming with grouse, white-tailed deer, and even elk and wolves, all sheltered beneath a canopy of ancient oak, tulip poplar, and chestnut trees. Originally established in 1753, Whitehall’s borders were far more expansive, encompassing what are now North and South Whitehall townships. A significant reshaping occurred in 1867, forming the modern, rectangular township that runs along the Lehigh River’s western bank. This new entity includes villages such as Egypt, Hokendauqua, and Fullerton, though it lost the area that became the borough of Coplay just two years later.

Climate of Whitehall, PA

Nestled in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh County, Whitehall Township experiences a full range of seasons, characteristic of a humid continental climate. Residents in the Hokendauqua area can expect chilly winters and warm, humid summers. Interestingly, the thermometer dips to an average low of 28.8°F in January, while July brings considerably warmer weather, with average highs around 73.8°F. This climatic profile places the township firmly within plant hardiness zone 6b, offering a clear picture of the growing conditions local gardeners must navigate.

Demographics of Whitehall, PA

A snapshot from the 2010 census reveals a Whitehall Township population of 29,173 people. These residents were spread across 11,607 households, which breaks down to a notable population density of nearly 2,000 people per square mile. Demographically, the community was overwhelmingly White, with smaller but significant African American and Asian populations, alongside a growing Hispanic or Latino presence representing 4.37% of residents.

Looking closer at household dynamics, a little over half were made up of married couples, though a substantial portion—more than a third—were classified as non-families. It’s worth noting that a significant number of individuals lived alone, particularly among residents aged 65 and older. The township’s age distribution was fairly balanced, with the largest cohort being adults between 25 and 44, resulting in a median age of 40 years.

Economically, the median household income stood at $43,070, with families earning a higher median of $51,597. A distinct gender pay gap was evident, with men’s median income significantly outpacing that of women. While most of the population was above the poverty line, economic hardship disproportionately affected the youngest and oldest residents, with nearly 9% of children living below the poverty line.
